PHILOSOPHY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
I think social justice means that people have equality in education, employment, housing, healthcare, and the ability to participate in the democratic process. School underfunding is a social justice issue because all children share the right to an equal education. Unemployment and people living below the poverty level is another example of social justice issue. Teenage pregnancy and access to health care is also a social justice issue. My family is able to live in a nice house in Chicago because the person who owns our house was fair and she did not discriminate against us. I am able to attend a school that offers me a quality education because community members advocated for the education of students in my community.
Social justice has not been achieved because our country still battles with issues of race and class. People are sometimes treated differently because they immigrated to this country and they do not have their papers. In the past, our country had slavery and Jim Crow Laws that separated different races unfairly. Minority people were often discriminated against. Current obstacles to social justice include violence, states that are attempting to limit certain citizens’ rights to vote, poverty in urban and rural areas, the lack of access to healthcare and education. Some families are facing separation because of deportation. This has become a big issue in my community and across the country.
Right now my role is social justice is to pass all of my online classes, so I can graduate high school on time. I will also finish my Fire Project because I want to graduate from high school. I want to pass high school so that I can be a nurse. I would promote social justice by helping people get access to health care.
Teen pregnancy is a social justice issue because it doesn’t let most teenagers finish high school or go to college. It also makes life very difficult for the teens, and it makes it hard to get a degree or a job.

- Two strategies that help us achieve social justice are marches and sit-ins. For example, last year Social Justice students tired to get their teachers and their AP classes back. The principal, Ms. Kathy Farr, was removed and replaced by an interim principle, who took away the AP classes and fired Ms. Hogan and Ms. Sangha. These strategies were successful because students were able to get teachers and AP classes back. People who are committed to social justice should be on time to school and care about their education and grades so they can graduate. Getting an education helps us move forward with social justice issues because it helps us make better decisions and make a difference.
